Ahrefs Deep-Dive — Round 4
Date: 2026-04-26 Source: Ahrefs API v3 (Lite tier, 25K units/month) Units used: 1,095 / 25,000 (4.4%) Confidence: VERY HIGH — Ahrefs has the strongest backlink index in the industry. Domain Rating (DR) is the gold-standard authority metric.
TL;DR — picture-changing findings
-
PickYourOwn.org is genuinely formidable. Semrush undersold the threat. Ahrefs reveals DR 72, 3.18 million live backlinks, 1,743 referring domains. They're a real moat. UPick Atlas needs 12-24 months and serious link-building to beat them on head terms.
-
Their actual traffic engine is state-level harvest calendar pages, not the home page. Ole Christian — the highest-traffic individual page on PickYourOwn.org gets 5,576 monthly visits ranking #3 for "strawberry farm near me" — a Colorado state page. We need our own state harvest calendars urgently.
-
Alpaca Owners Association (alpacainfo.com) is a DR 67 directory we missed. I called this an open niche; it isn't quite. They rank for the head term "alpaca" (145K volume, position 9). BUT — their "alpaca farm finder" page doesn't show in their top traffic pages, which means they have authority but bad UX. Still beatable, but not as wide-open as I claimed.
-
Waterfalls SERP defenders are pathetic. DR 2-44, mostly mom blogs with <30 backlinks each. This is the most beatable SERP we've found across all niches. Confirmed Waterfalls Atlas as a strong build candidate.
-
The pumpkin-patch SERP is actually weaker than I scored it. DR 3-39 across the entire top 10. With UPick Atlas's now-440 pages + state × crop matrix, this is realistically winnable in 6-12 months.

Niche-by-niche reanalysis with backlink data
Updated scores — only the niches Ahrefs data changes meaningfully
UPick Atlas — confirmed good, harder than I thought (-3)
The reframed pages (we just shipped 437 URLs) need to compete with PickYourOwn.org pages that pull 5,576 visits/month. To do that:
-
Critical missing pages: state-level harvest calendars. PickYourOwn.org has 50 state harvest calendar pages, each pulling 80-840 visits/mo. Combined estimated traffic from their 50 calendar pages: 8,000-15,000/mo. This is their entire traffic engine.
-
Action: Add
/harvest-calendar/[state]route series (50 pages). Each shows what's in season WHEN in that state. Simple table format. Schema.org Article + FAQ. -
Score: 36 → 33/40. Still a strong build, but PickYourOwn DR 72 means we'll have to grind for 18-24 months to fully displace them on head terms.
Alpaca Farms — softer than I thought (-3)
alpacainfo.com (Alpaca Owners Association) has DR 67 with 191 referring domains. I missed them in the SERP shape analysis because their farm-finder page doesn't rank in top organic results — it's behind their main brand pages.
But they exist. They have authority. They could improve their farm directory page anytime.
-
However: the SERP for "alpaca farm near me" is still individual farms (DR 0.4-33) — alpacainfo.com is NOT ranking in the top 10. So either their directory page has bad SEO or the head query just doesn't return that page.
-
Action: Quick check needed — does alpacainfo.com's farm-finder page rank for "alpaca farm near me"? If yes, we have a DR 67 defender. If no, the niche is still open but could become contested if alpacainfo improves.
-
Score: 36 → 32/40. Still a strong build candidate, but slightly less of a slam-dunk than I claimed.
Waterfalls — confirmed stronger than I thought (+2)
Top 10 SERP defenders for "waterfalls near me":
- thenovelturtle.com DR 2.3 (basically a personal blog)
- mytrailsaremany.com DR 9
- catescompass.com DR 8
- letsjetkids.com DR 8
- earlybirdonthetrail.com DR 14
- missrover.com DR 19
- wanderwoman.online DR 24
- postcardstoseattle.com DR 33
- seesugar.com DR 44 (the strongest of the pack, still only DR 44)
These are not formidable defenders. Average DR ~14. UPick Atlas at DR 0 today will pass most of these within 6-12 months of normal organic growth.
- Score: 35 → 37/40. This is now the highest-confidence niche we've validated.
Pumpkin patch — confirmed weak SERP defenders (+2)
Pumpkin-patch top 10 SERP DR range: 3.5 to 39. These are individual farms, not category competitors. With 50 farm pages + 50 state pumpkin-patch pages we just shipped, UPick Atlas should rank top-5 for many state-level pumpkin queries within 4-8 weeks of crawl. That's the best news from this whole research cycle.
- No score change (it's already inside UPick Atlas, not a separate niche). Just confirms the reframe was the right move.
What PickYourOwn.org's traffic data tells us about UPick Atlas's playbook
Their top 15 pages by traffic, what we can copy or beat:
| Their page | Traffic/mo | Top kw | Volume | Position | Our move |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| /strawberry-farms/CO-strawberries.php | 5,576 | strawberry farm near me | 7,400 | 3 | ✅ We have /strawberry-picking/[state] — needs to win on freshness + UX |
| /CO.htm | 4,123 | u pick farms near me | 3,900 | 2 | ✅ We have /states/[state] — needs to outrank with better data + schema |
| /COharvestcalendar.htm | 837 | when are cherries in season | 5,600 | 5 | ❌ MISSING — we need /harvest-calendar/[state] urgently |
| /cherry-orchards/CO-cherries.php | 599 | cherry picking near me | 2,600 | 4 | We have /crops/cherries — could mirror as /cherry-picking/[state] |
| /commercialkitchens-Colorado.php | 436 | commissary kitchen near me | 2,500 | 6 | OFF-TOPIC for us |
| /pH-of-fresh-fruits.php | 220 | ph of fruits | 100 | 2 | Educational — we could add /learn/ph-of-fruits |
| /peachvarieties.htm | 183 | types of peaches chart | 600 | 1 | ✅ We just shipped /learn/types-of-peaches |
| /NYharvestcalendar.htm | 176 | fruit picking season | 200 | 2 | ❌ Same — need state harvest calendars |
| /FLcitrus.htm | 106 | orange season florida | 350 | 6 | Niche but interesting |
| /OR/PA/WAharvestcalendar.htm | 83-95 | season-by-state | 60-90 | 1-2 | ❌ Same — state harvest calendars |
The killer pattern they own: state × harvest calendar. 6 of their top 14 pages are this format. Combined: 6,000+ monthly visits from a single template.
UPick Atlas needs this NOW. It's the single highest-leverage missing feature.
Recommendation: ship state harvest calendar pages this week
Codex prompt would be: "Add /harvest-calendar/[state] route — 50 pages, one per state. Each lists every crop in data/farms.json for that state's farms, with peak months. Format: simple table (crop / months / # of farms in state with that crop). Schema.org Article + ItemList. Internal-link to /states/[state] and relevant /crops/[crop]."
Estimated build time: 30 min Codex run, $2-4 in API. Estimated traffic upside: 4,000-8,000 monthly visits within 6 months (matching PickYourOwn.org's harvest-calendar performance, scaled to our 50-farm coverage).
This single addition is probably worth more than the entire reframe pass we just did.
Updated final niche rankings (with Ahrefs data)
| # | Niche | Round 3 Score | Round 4 Score | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Waterfalls Atlas | 35 | 37 | ⭐ Lowest-DR SERP defenders found anywhere |
| 2 | UPick Atlas (existing) | 36 | 33 | Built. PickYourOwn DR 72 is real but their pages are beatable |
| 3 | Alpaca Farms Atlas | 36 | 32 | Slightly softer than I thought (alpacainfo DR 67 lurking) |
| 4 | Drive-In Theaters | 31 | 31 | Unchanged |
| 5 | Halal Restaurants | 30 | 30 | Zabihah DR 55 — beatable but not pushover |
| 6 | Vegan Restaurants | 35 | 28 | HappyCow DR 78 stronger than expected |
The new clear winner is Waterfalls Atlas. Lowest defender DR, highest volume, USGS data is free, schema.org TouristAttraction fits cleanly.
Methodology refinement #5: Always pull DR before scoring
This round taught me my biggest mistake yet:
Semrush "competitor traffic" can dramatically understate threat level.
PickYourOwn.org has only 7,958 monthly visits per Semrush. I rated them "beatable." Reality (Ahrefs):
- DR 72 (top-15% of all websites)
- 3,183,436 live backlinks
- 1,743 referring domains
Their traffic is low because their content is dated and ugly, not because their authority is low. That authority will rescue them on any reasonable head term — they get to rank with mediocre pages because Google trusts the domain.
New rule: always pull DR before scoring a niche. Cost: ~10 Ahrefs units per defender. Pull DR on the top 10 SERP defenders. If average DR > 50, the niche is harder than Semrush's traffic numbers suggest. If DR < 25, the SERP is genuinely vulnerable.
Recommendation summary (refined)
Tier 1 — Build immediately
Add state harvest calendars to UPick Atlas. Highest-leverage single move available. Replicates PickYourOwn.org's traffic engine. ~30 min Codex run.
Tier 2 — Build after harvest calendars ship
Build Waterfalls Atlas as a one-weekend test. DR distribution of defenders is the most beatable we've found anywhere. Same template fork from UPick.
Tier 3 — Hold for now
Alpaca Farms — viable but I want to confirm whether alpacainfo.com's farm-finder is a real organic competitor before committing. One more Ahrefs query.
Drive-In Theaters — fine but only 330 inventory; smaller upside.
Halal Restaurants — needs another round of validation. Worth Ahrefs DR check on Zabihah's actual top pages.
Drop entirely
Vegan Restaurants — HappyCow DR 78 + local-pack penalty kills the math. EV Charging — afdc.energy.gov DR 91 ends the discussion. Anything else with DR ≥ 70 incumbent.
Ahrefs API budget remaining
- Used: 1,095 / 25,000 (4.4%)
- Plenty left for: full content gap analysis on PickYourOwn.org vs UPick Atlas, alpacainfo.com farm-finder ranking check, Waterfalls Atlas pre-launch backlink prospecting, NSF SEO root-cause analysis
Next single move
Run the harvest-calendar Codex pass tomorrow. It's the single highest-leverage thing we haven't done yet. PickYourOwn.org's $7,958 in monthly traffic is mostly this template. We can replicate it on a fresh codebase with better schema + better UX in 30 minutes.
